Bf 109 salvaged at Rørvik, Norway
 

Uffz.Günther Seraphim's Messerschmitt was salvaged from the sea and brought to Rørvik today.

Seraphim made a forced landing on the sea due to engine failure. He was rescued by locals.

Nice! Who did the salvage? Any plans with the wrack or do you have any information how they will prevent that the wrack will start to rot?

Pulling it out vertically from the sea destroyed the rivets of the aft fuselage. The tail broke away when they wanted to place it horizontally on three wooden palettes. Salvaging without thinking. Amateurs.
Marc, what would they say if you´d salvage archeological artefacts - so let´s say wooden alamannic coffins - by letting them collapse and break apart at the end of salvaging?

Hi.

Aircraft to be used for spare parts only for ongoing project, so keeping the wreck intact structurally was not the main concern according to the rescuing team.

The freshness of the paint seen on this and other wrecks lifted from saltwater after 60+ years does not stop to amaze me...

Hallo Roland,

Well, let's keep a cool head, Roland. Yes, they were a bit rash on the last part of the recovery, but look at the global feat they managed: to pluck from the seabed a Bf 109 resting on its nose since 67 years WITH its engine is no small feat!

I for one would celebrate this fact. The breaking of the tail is kind of a minor collateral damage as all the pieces are still around; no comparison thus with the dramatic Fw 200 break-up some years ago...

And to be honest: it is much easier to recover alamannic wooden coffins then tons of thoroughly eaten up aluminum and metal...
