Hans Gajewski NJG 2 - searching for information

A friend of my mother in law has been flying as navigator on JU88 NJG2 together with Hans Gajewski. To do him a favour I gave him the actual edition of the german magazine "Flug Revue Classic". Inside he found an old photography of Hans Gajewski and he immediately has been "in old times". Because he´s really a lovely old guy I now try to find out if there are still living family members. Would be glad to get a friendly note from one of you.
Kind regards
Jörg (Germany)

Hi Jorg

All I have on this pilot are his four claims:-

16th Dec 1943 5./NJG 2 Fw Lancaster 1845 uhr 6400 metres Nr1
28th May 1944 6./NJG 2 Fw Lancaster 0313 uhr 2800 metres Nr2
7th JUn 1944 6./NJG 2 Fw Lancaster 0207 uhr 1000 metres Nr3
29th Jun 1944 6./NJG 2 Fw Halifax Soissons/Fismes 0106 uhr 3200 metres Nr4

Can find no reason why he should stop claiming i.e never seems to have been shot down himself, and you have suggested he survived the war, yet is was increasingly successsful!

Regards

Johannes

Hello ,

According to Tom Krackers site , Gajewski " POW 26/27 December, 1944; belly landed 4 km east of Chalons-sur-Marne following engine fire during an interdiction sortie "

Hi,

ADI(K) Report No. 49/1945, dated 11 January 1945, confirms that Ofw. Hans GAJEWSKI (born 24 Aug 1920), pilot; Uffz. Hans VON WEBER (born 30 Mar 1922), Bordfunker, and; Fw. Helmut VON HÖRSTEN (born 6 Dec 1913), Bordmechaniker were all captured uninjured after their Ju88 4R+AP of 6./NJG2 was shot down 2.5 miles east of Chalons-sur-Marne, at 22.50 hours on 26 December 1944. The report states that, "Whilst searching for further targets, the crew noticed that one engine had caught fire. The pilot made a belly landing in a field and the crew left the scene whilst the aircraft continued to burn; they were captured by the U.S. Army during the following day." (source: AIR 40/2420, TNA, London)

A LW loss report records that GAJEWSKI'S first name was Johannes and that the werke nummer of their Ju88 was 620517. (source: Namentliche Verlustmeldung, WaSt, Germany)

SRA reports (by ADI, made from secret recordings at the PoW camp) state that GAJEWSKI was captured on 27 December 1944 near Chalons-sur-Marne, while VON WEBER and VON HÖRSTEN were both captured on 27 December 1944 near Avre. Unfortunately, no recorded comments by GAJEWSKI are in any of these reports. (source: AIR 40/3100, TNA, London)

Cheers

Rod

Thanks a lot for your quick remarks and friendly notes. Well - even in these fast "Internet-times" 24hours are not the time to be sure that there isn´t any further contact to lively family members. I´ll keep waiting a bit and go on searching.
Kind regards
Jörg
