Airfields Radzyn and Rogoznica

Hi all!

Different sources say, that SKG210 was stationed in Radzyn from 19.6.41 to 28.6.41. But in Flight Books, base airfield is named as "Rogoznica", it is 31km NNE from Radzyn.

My question is: whre exactly was that airfield?

Or, were there "main" airfiled in Radzyn and "field" airfield in Radzyn?

Often, you have the Gruppe base at X while Staffeln or even smaller parts parts of it were based elsewhere. Are all your flightbooks from one Staffel?

Or you have one name for a base, but several small AFs in the surrounding. But 30km sounds a bit too much for this explanation.

Next explanation would be an "Absprungplatz". Example: II./JG52 was based in Leipzig / Romania in June summer 1944, but used to fly every morning to Iasi, using it as "Absprungplatz" in order to take off for combat flights in the direct vicinity.

Re: Airfields Radzyn and Rogoznica

According to our Eastern Front Airfields compilation this is:

Radzyn (in English:. Radzyn Podl.) - in central Poland (62 km north of Lublin); classed as a Fliegerhorst (a major airfield with full services); this fields was also known as Radzyn-Jedlanka.

We have no record of a place called "Rogoznica".

We hope that this helps.

Re: Airfields Radzyn and Rogoznica

I just received an update from Larry deZeng concerning the field at "Rogoznica":

Rogozniczka (52 02 N – 22 52 E)
General: landing ground in C Poland (E Poland today) 44 km ESE of Siedlce and 8 km NE of Miedzyrzec Podlaski. One of the numerous airfields developed by the Lw. in eastern Poland 1940-41 in preparation for the attack on the USSR in Jun 41.
Air Units: (go to Google and enter: Rogozniczka site:ww2.dk ).
Station Commands: Fl.H.Kdtr. E 3/IV (Jun 41); Fl.Pl.Kdo. A 17/II (Sep 41).
Station Units
On 22 Jun 41: Lw.-Bau-Btl. 6/XIII; Lw.-Bau-Gerätezug 9/XI; m.Fl.Betr.St.Kol. 4/IV; Trsp.Kol. 20/XI; Ldssch.Zug 240/VI and 299/VI.

Larry is working on a hugely expanded airfield compilation and the above material is one of the consequences. Thanks Larry!

Re: Airfields Radzyn and Rogoznica

Evgeny,

When Ground personel of I./SKG 210 arrived in "Radzyn" on June 7th they described it as "Feldflugplatz" without any baracks. Hardly what Doug described as a Fliegerhorst, but that being said, I think they were at Radzyn and not at Rogozniczka. Indeed the a/c of I./SKG 210 might have used Rogozniczka as "Absprunghafen"...

Cheers,

John

Re: Airfields Radzyn and Rogoznica

Larry has commented on John's comments and presents a plausible explanation. To quote from his e-mail:

"The Ob.d.L. airfields gazetteer I used was dated August 1943 and this used the term "Flugplatz" (a developed airfield with fairly comprehensive services, but no where as developed as your typical fully developed Fliegerhorst in Germany) in its description of Radzyn. The Luftwaffe began working on Radzyn during the winter of 1940/41 and work continued for the next year or so. Perhaps by summer 1943 it had been developed to the point where it could no longer be considered a Feldflugplatz or an Einsatzhafen and had been reclassified as a Flugplatz. The presence of a barracks area have have not come about until after June 1941. On the other hand, Rogozniczka in June 1941 was definitely a Feldflugplatz or an Ausweichflugplatz belonging to Radzyn.

Radzyn (POL) (e. Radzyn Podl.) (a.k.a. Radzyn-Jedlanka) (51 45 N – 22 37 E)
General: airfield in C Poland 62 km N Lublin and 5 km S of Radzyn Podlaski. Had a barracks area.
Air Units: (go to Google and enter: Radzyn site:ww2.dk ).
Station Commands: Fl.H.Kdtr. E 51/XIII (c. Apr – Jul 41).
Station Units
On 22 Jun 41: 2.Kp. Lw.-Bau-Btl. 8/IV; 1.Kp. Lw.-Bau-Btl. 2/XI; m.Fl.Betr.St.Kol. 4/III; Trsp.Kol. 4/IV, 5/VI and 119/VI; Flugzeug-Bergungstrupp 5/VI.

Hopefully this clears things up.
