Bombing of Vitry-le-Francois,Fr.16 May 40

Hi,
I am wondering wich german lw units bombed the town of Vitry-le-Francois ,in Champagne region, France, on 16th May 1940 ?
Why to destroy this city without strong military forces or equipment and so far from the borders ?
The town was destroyed at 70%.

Hi,

probably the bombers were from KG55. They were instructed to attack railway targets.
