165 Sqn/Smallwood claim, 6/6/44
Hi all,
I have another 165 Sqn claims query; any help would be appreciated. The entry for W/C DG 'Splinters' Smallwood in 'TOE' indicates he had a shared victory with three pilots of 165 Sqn on D-Day, namely an Ju 88. Was this a confirmed victory or not? Or was the claim downgraded or 'unlodged'? Smallwood was Wing Leader, Predannack, at the time. Cheers, Bruce |
Re: 165 Sqn/Smallwood claim, 6/6/44
Smallwood, Flt Lt J G Clouston, Plt Off D Moffat-Wilson & WO J M Walton claimed a Ju 88 at 2055 hrs near Baud which was probably a Ju 88 D-1 from 3/123. By the way, the 20 Mar 44 claim was a Ju 88 of Wekusta 2. When the 165 Sqn Association was going, I was an honorary member so have all claims, losses and photos of most aircrew if you are interested. I also have this combat report in full and an unofficial 165 Sqn diary

Re: 165 Sqn/Smallwood claim, 6/6/44
Thanks Chris. I'd actually posted this question at RAF Cmds last year but without success and had queried others. It isn't apparently included in John Foreman's book listing RAF claims during 6/44 (can't think of the title at the moment); so it was confirmed then? And was this the engagement
in which JG Clouston was shot down by return fire? Cheers, Bruce |
Re: 165 Sqn/Smallwood claim, 6/6/44
It was mentioned in his Fighter Command War Diaries but not in Over The Beaches! Clouston was forced to bale out near Morlaix in MK589/SK-E at 2140 hrs but was then killed near Tours 28 Jun 44. 10 minutes later, Flt Lt A D May's MK751/SK-T ditched off The Lizard and he was reported missing

Thanks for clearing that one up Chris; never thought I'd get to the bottom
of it! |
