RAF Air Raid on Munich, Germany on Nov, 8, 1940

Hello:

I am trying to find out what squadrons and their associated aircraft took part in the bombing of the Munich Beer Hall that Adolf Hitler was supposed to be speaking at or attending a function there on the night of November 8, 1940 and were there any losses?.

Thank you in advance.

Michael

Good afternoon Michael !

There is no specific note to a raid to Munich in Martin Middlebrooks book "The Bomber Command War Diaries" for that night whilst Bill Chorley's book "RAF Bomber Command Losses - 1939-1940" reports two Hampden I losses on opration for Munich of No. 83 Sdn and No. 144 Sqn.

Both aircraft were abandoned by the crew over UK by obviously mechanical trouble. No injuries of both crews were reported. Interesting thematic.

Hope this helps.

Best regards !

Hi Horst:

Thank you for your reply and information, I'll try and do a search of those two squadrons that you mentioned about to see if I can learn more about this raid.

Are you confusing with a later raid by Mosquito's to interrupt Goering?

The railyards at Munich were the real target. That Hitler would hold a speech in town at the same time came as a bonus for the RAF to have a say as well.

Found http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.ph...2682133/8.html and also
http://www.ltmrecordings.com/bombercommand2notes.html (see under 3).

It appears that some 30-50 Wellingtons and Hampdens took part, including No. 75 Squadron according NZETC.Org.

Leendert
