Macchi MC.205

Gentlemen,

here is one for our Italian friends and experts - I would like to get some technical data referring to the Macchi MC.205 which were flown by II./JG 77 in late 1943. The figures I need are

- length over all
- height while standing three-point
- empty weight
- take off weight

So far I have found only contradictory information so I would be very grateful to get the true figures.

Many thanks in advance and

regards

Jochen Prien

Re: Macchi MC.205

Much of the confusion concerning the weights of the C.205 is due to the fact that there are three sets of data circulating:

the first is relative to the early prototype, tested in may 1942 and having an empty weight of 2,524Kg and a full weight of 3,224kg (useful load of 700kg);

the second set is relative to the pre-production prototype of "Serie I" version (two 12,7mm + two 7,7mm) with an empty weight of 2,568Kg and a full weight of 3,268kg (useful load of 700kg);

the third and final set is relative to the production "Serie III" aircraft (two 12,7mm + two 20mm cannons) with an empty weight of 2,581Kg and a full weight of 3,408kg (useful load of 827kg).

The above data are extracted from handwritten notes of Ing. Mario Castoldi, the designer of the aircraft, which I have in copy.

Hope this helps.

Dear Don, dear Piero and of course dear old Ferdinando,

many thanks for your kind assistance, it was just what I needed and it makes me feel better to have these data after I felt at unease with the original figures I still found in the proofs of JFV 11 / I. You will find the results in the oncoming new volume of the Jagdfliegerverbände which will now go to print and will be out very soon.

Thaks again and

Regards

Jochen Prien
