Meaning of "Gruppe 1 C"
I am researching the backgrounds of a particular airfight occurred on May,25,1944 over "Piacenza/S.Damiano Airport"
(In that airfight - flying a Macchi C 205V fighter - lost his life a close relative of mine, Ten. Pil. Vittorio Satta). In the course of my research I came across the terms: "Gruppe ic", that should refer to a Unit - or Organisation - direcly or indirectly related to "Schlacht Geschwader 4" (then using Piacenza Airport as its main Logistical Base) in its attempt (operating from many smaller airports and tactical "strips" much nearer than Piacenza to the frontline) to stop the Allied Armies' advance up the Italian Peninsula after the Salerno Landings. - - - Can any member of tis excellent Forum explain me what "Gruppe ic" does mean?........ Wandering on the net i found out that 1) - the "Gruppe ic" I am speaking of kept a "Kriegstagebuch"; 2) - the term "Gruppe ic" is still referred to in today's Germany. Thanks in advance to whomever will help..... M. Satta |
Re: Meaning of "Gruppe 1 C"
I think it refers to a position on the Headquarters Staff, in this case the Intelligence Officer for the relevant Gruppe.

silly question
Since I did not see the document you are quoting, I do not know how much likely this hypotesis is, but ... is there any chance that the "Gruppe 1 C" you are referring to was the "I Gruppo Caccia" Satta belonged to when he was shot down?Best,Andrea

Re: Meaning of "Gruppe 1 C"
As I owned a copy of the document and supplied the data it contained to Mr. Satta several years ago, I think I can safely reply...
The correct explaination is that of hucks216, the title being relative to a position on the Headquarters Staff, in this case the Intelligence Officer for the relevant unit - the unit here being Flughafen Bereich (Airfield District) 2/VI -and it was found at the Bundesarchiv from the reports of the unit's War Diary (compiled by the "Gruppe Ic" officer) about the enemy-related events in Piacenza area which was included within the unit's boundaries. Hope it helps |
Re: Meaning of "Gruppe 1 C"
Thank You all for the exhaustive answers to my questions.
In the occasion I'd like to send my most sincere greetings to Mr Ferdinando D'Amico, who has been always generously helpful and practically gave me the the run of his Archive. Last time we met personally (many years ago) he told he had lost interest in historical research. I am glad he changed his mind. Mario Satta |
