Walter Wolfrum passed away
 

Yesterday I got a notice that Walter Wolfrum surprisingly died some days ago at the age of 87. He was one of the last Ritterkreuzträger, flying with JG52.

Only 2 months ago, he invited me to his house and we spent some nice and interesting hours talking about his war experiences and the consequences for his life. It is really sad to loose him. I will try to carry on the basic message of his generation's experiences: Keep peace!

My compassion goes to his wife and family.

Poor man had a stroke. Would insist on doing gardening in 30 degrees heat. Taken to hospital, but three more strokes finished him. A remarkable life, so badly wounded by a Russian bullet in the hip that the Russian's released him almost immediately fearing his death, so ironic and pleasing that he should survive another six and a half decades!
Seems he was an honest claimer also. He was the last known active pilot with Jg52.............much missed.

What do you mean with last active pilot of JG 52....? Do you want to say he was the last pilot of JG 52 that was still alive?

Herr Barbas is in contact with a pilot who was assigned to Jg52 in 1945, but never actually flew for them. Walter Wolfrum was the last pilot known to be alive that flew for Jg52.....unless somebody can produce another!

Just amazed and a little bit puzzled. As you may know I am working on the JG 6 Unit History for some time now. Only for III./JG 6 I have still at least 7 surviving pilots and maybe 5 more as I did not talk to those for over a year.

Hi, According to the Aces High website (www.aceshigh-uk.com) Fähnrich Manfred Leisebein (3./JG52)was attending a signing at this weekend's Duxford airshow.

I visited Walter and his wife, with my family several times last year. It is ironic that he died as a result of working in his garden, as it was a great passion of his.

He would swim in his pool each morning and spend much of his day in the garden.

He was a gentleman and always very welcoming. His wife is a wonderful lady and our thoughts and condolences are with her and the rest of the family.
