All USAAF claims in Europe on 16 Oct 1944 were made by Italy-based used: 10 Bf 109s shot down by 309th FS, 31st FG and 7 (type not known by me) by 319th FS, 325th FG.

You will find the details of 309th FS claims there: http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=13014

By the way, A PM to the TOCH forum Michal seems to be interesting as he apparently did researchs for this day.

MTO claims on this date are 17/1/6, a mixture of Me-109s and FW-190s. The 309th FS's claims are at 50-20N, 13-57E at 1215 hours; the others are in the Dresden area, East of Dresden, or near Dresden.

The only ETO claim is for a FW-200 damaged, time and location unstated.

Frank.

Hello Frank,

Thanks for your reply.

To be more precise - I am looking for the USA Mustang-unit(s) that encountered the Me 109G-14's of II./JG 3 that day near Görlitz, Löwenberg and Glück. 309 FS was involved in another engagement. Any thoughts..?

Best regards,
Rob

Re: USA Mustang claims 16 Oct 44

Görlitz is east of Dresden, so given the accuracy of WWII claims (no GPS then), the opponents of II/JG 3 might well have been the 319th FS pilots.

It was a bad day for JG 3 with the following losses:
I./JG 3: two combat losses
II./JG 3: three combat losses, one accident loss, one aircraft damaged without enemy action
IV./JG 3: one combat loss, two aircraft damaged without enemy action

The Fw 190 of IV./JG 3 were usually covered by the Bf 109 of the other groups, so the claims of 319th FS on a mix of Fw 190 and Bf 109 may well have been done against a formation of JG 3.

Re: USA Mustang claims 16 Oct 44

Hello Laurent,

Thanks for the data.

My interest are the activities of II./JG 3 that day. This unit suffered several losses due to "Bekämpfung anglo. amerik. Bomberverbände. Bei Luftkampf mit Mustangs ..."

Uffz Hans Egon Schunk (also stated as Schunck) of 8./JG 3 - at Glück (near Halban/Schlesien) - badly wounded - Me 109G-14, blaue 4 and w/nr 462962 - crash landing due to combats with Mustangs.

Uffz Johann Max Elwischger of 5./JG 3 - at Lauban near Görlitz - KIA - Me 109G-14, weisse 10, w/nr 762963 -

Fw Leonhard Josef Wenzel of 5./JG 3 - Lauban near Görlitz - KIA - Me 109G-14, weisse 3, w/nr 781126 -

Uffz Günter Dieter Lehnik of 7./JG 3 - Groß Walditz near Löwenberg/Schlesien - KIA - Me 109G-14, gelbe 11, w/nr 461421

Who can provide me with more details on these losses and/or USA input relating to these. Thanks

Best regards,
Rob
