Re: Photos + 8-18-05

Hi Ed,

Thanks for the new pics of the landed planes on the Zombor (Sombor) airfield. I have some notes to the one, showing the nose of the natural metal B-24, #29, photo ID: 6202072398.

15. USAAF., 461. BG B-24L, #29, S/N: 44-49428 (not 44-49429 !!!) landed on Pécs airfield in Southern Hungary on March 26, 1945 in Russian zone, not in Sombor!
There was another 461. BG B-24 indeed, which landed on Zombor airfield, Hungary (now Sombor, Serbia) some weeks earlier: B-24J-10-FO, S/N: 42-51610, which belonged to the same, 765th squadron. (This is why she could be marked with the same number.)
This photo shows this B-24J with the typical B-24J-10-FO nose. This is not a B-24L model! B-24L, S/N: 44-49428 landed at Pécs, -not Sombor- in the next month with the same black’29’ number.
The resolution of the picture is not the best, so I cannot see all the details in the background on the tail section of the other B-24, but I assume she is B-24J-15-FO, S/N: 42-51990 of the 455. BG, which also landed at Sombor airfield on March 8, 1945.

Do you have any other picture showing that plane in the background? Is there any side number visible between her tail section and national insigna? It would solve this question. Also, any pictures showing the tail parts would identify these birds. Thanks again,

Gabor

Thanks Ed, this is great. Do you have any picture showing the other B-24J behind the one wearing #29? I think she has a black diamond on the tail. If so, she had to belong to the 455. BG, S/N: 42-51990. This plane landed on Sombor airfield too. I would need her fuselage number between the tail section and the side gun position(s), but so far I couldn't find any data on it.

Do you have any info on the ShAP, VVS unit to which Il-2 m3 white 'A' belonged to? Thanks,
Gabor

Hello Ed, and Gabor,

First, thank you Ed for shareing these two photos of the B24.

Gabor, are you 100% sure of the details you give above re serial number etc ?

I may be wrong but I think that it could be more likely to be a/c "29" from the 724th Bomber Squadron, 451st Bomber Group that was lost on the 25th April 1945. Serial number 42-95342. a B24 H - 30 - FO

The a/c number would be correct, the light colour bands around the motors would fit too.
and I think that the photo shows an "H" model.

She was said to have been hit by flak but what became of the crew at this time I do not know. Carl-Fredrik Geust has her landing at the Base of the 468 BAP, 5 VA where ever that was ? He has at least three B24's landing in Soviet area on the 25th .

Also the B24 behind, in camouflage, couldn't it be a Red Star on the tail ?

night and thanks again.

I am still seeking Soviet P51's

Alex
