Decorations of Bernard Dupérier

Hi,

I would like to know when (year, month) well-known fighter W/C Bernard Dupérier, FAFL received DFC, Grand Croix de la Légion d´Honeur and OBE.
I have tried to find something in LG, unfortunately without success.
Does anyone have informations please ?

Hi Dan,

Merci. I believed the DFC was awarded in July 1942. But Legion d´Honneur not during the war ?

Re: Decorations of Bernard Dupérier

There are five ranks for the Legion d'Honneur:
Chevalier (= Knight)
Officier (=Officer)
Commandeur (=Commander)
Grand Officier (=Great Officer)
Grand-Croix (=Great Cross)

I don't know the precise rule, but I know that French people will always enter the order at the rank of Knight, and then may rise their ranks later (but I don't know if they can "jump" one rank). On the other hand foreign people may be nominated direct to one of the highest ranks.

So Bernard Dupérier received other awards of the Légion d'Honneur before the Grand-Croix in 1956, but I don't know how to find that.

Re: Decorations of Bernard Dupérier

Hi Dan and Laurent,

Thank you for interesting info.
Does it mean that Dupérier could have been decorated by lowest rank of LdH for the first time during war ?
A few of Czechoslovak aces were decorated by Chevalier rank during French campaign, so it makes sense that reputable French leader could have Chevalier rank during later stage of WWII too, right ?

Re: Decorations of Bernard Dupérier

Given that Duperier first led a French squadron, then when in a headquarters volunteered for being dropped in France to fight with the Resistance and was wounded there, he very probably was decorated at least once during the war.

I won't say that it is or was "easy" to become a "Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur", but for example, most French officers killed in September 1939, and a part of the lower ranks having suffered the same fate, received posthumously this award.
