Whirlwind air kill

Greetings all,

I am interesting in air combat where was engaged Whirlwind's SF+A P6993 and SF+S P6982 of No. 137 Sq chasing a lone Ju-88 over the North Sea on 19.12.1942 with Bartlett and Barclay as pilots. Claim of Bartlett was 'damaged' since they did not wait to see their victim crash, but Germans had a confirmed loss that day of a Ju-88 so I don't think it got home!!!

I would be interesting in more precise details about this combat, if possible any good image.

Thank you :)

Hi Srecko,

The claim was on 20 August 1942, not 19 December 1942.

To regret I have just few sources about this. Do you have additional info? Thank you for attention.

Hi Srecko
Michal is right: the only occasion these two pilots made a claim together was on August 20 and both of them had left the squadron by your original date in December. I don’t think that a combat report has survived for the August event, but I’ve attached the relevant page from the Squadron Operations Record Book which gives some basic info. The “Smith’s Knoll” referred to is a sandbank (with a lightship in those days) in the North Sea about 35km north-west of Great Yarmouth.
Hope this helps
Niall
