Shot Down Ku.Fl.Gr 406 Pilot Question
I am looking for details with regards to the shooting down of a Luftwaffe pilot. The airman, Wilhelm Meyer, was serving with 2./Kuestenfliegergruppe 406 at the time. Thanks to his Soldbuch, www.ww2.dk , Volksbund database & www.luftwaffe.no I have been able to find out that he was shot down & killed (along with his crew member Willi Seedorf) while piloting an Arado-196A-3 WkNr 0318 in the vicinity of Hustadvika in Norway on 14th June 1943, but is there any on-line resource/publication where I can find out which Allied squadron was responsible for the attack?
I had originally thought it might of been an aircraft from the Banff Strike Wing but having checked they weren't operational at the time with RAF Banff only being officially opened in April 1943 and the Mosquitos & Beaufighters not arriving until September 1943. Any pointers are much appreciated. |

Re: Shot Down Ku.Fl.Gr 406 Pilot Question
A Mosquito of 333 Squadron made a claim that day, but from the type and location of the claim, it's more likely to have been the Bv 138.

Re: Shot Down Ku.Fl.Gr 406 Pilot Question
Thanks for that - the Bv-138 from Ku.Fl.Gr 706 is listed as being hit in location Pl.Qu. 05 Ost/6988 but with no personnel injuries and 15% damage but at least it shows that the RAF were active off the Norwegian coast that day.

HI,
he wasnt shot down. In the letter stand: ..flown air protection he was already a 3/4 hour at the escort if he suddenly from a curve fell. |

"...the crash even more inexplicable. Wlhelm flew air cover for a convoy. He was already hanging 3 / 4 hour at the convoy when he suddenly crashed in a curve. Immediately to the accident site....could recover only the body of our dear comrades." But the Kracker Archive has the following... KIA 14 June, 1943; shot down by Soviet fighters near Hustadvika. His Observer, Uffz Willi Seedorf, was also killed. Source: SIG Norway. ...but unless there is another Hustadvika in Norway (which doesn't show on Google Earth) the area of his crash seems to be out of range for Soviet fighters. |
Re: Shot Down Ku.Fl.Gr 406 Pilot Question
Hi Hucks
Have you ruled out that he might have been shot down by friendly fire from the convoy he was protecting? It happened to RAF aircraft on many occasions! Cheers Brian |
Re: Shot Down Ku.Fl.Gr 406 Pilot Question
I hadn't actually thought of that but it is certainly a possibility.
I have emailed the owner of the Luftwaffe In Norway site asking him what the air combat loss is based on so hopefully he will be able to help clarify the issue. |
