Quick German translation question -
 

Überschlag - overturned (as in flipped over on its backside) or overshot (like in overshot runway)? I've seen both interpretations, which is correct? Thx, Jim P.

The best solution would be to give the complete sentence in which the word is used. The most likely translation would be the first, the aircraft flipped over. To overshoot a runway would be translated as zu weit kommen.

Hmmm, maybe it´s better to say "rollover", especially when you talk of an aircraft.
Flipped over means "umdrehen" and in my opinion that word is really too kind for such an accident, right ? ;o)

But like Sylvester Stadler said before - for correct translation you must see the word in context.

Überschlag bei Landung is quite common in damage/loss reports. I've always understood it to be "overturned when landing."

Hi Nick,

an aircraft flying a turn - means a Kehre or simply umdrehen - like a person turns around to come back. Overturned you can say when talking about a car-accident. I want say rollover is the translation for Überschlag.

The car overturned
The aircraft rolled over

Anyway, I´m not a translator and my english really isn´t perfect. Maybe here are some people who have more experience in words for aircraft accidents to tell us the right word ?

so Überschlag bei Landung would make it a ground loop (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_loop_%28aviation%29

I think this is incorrect, from my experience with German texts a groundloop is a sudden and violent swing in the horizontal plane (around the top or yaw axis), whereas an "Überschlag" is a turnover in the vertical plane (around the lateral axis). A sort of negative looping on the ground, so to speak...

I've always thought it was 'overturned when landing' as well, but as I have been progressing through the Schulen losses, I've come across entries I had from other sources which said in English 'overshot runway'. Since I'm not particularly fluent in German, I wanted to confirm that my interpretation (after all these years!) was correct. I actually came across an entry for an 'Überschlag bei Notlandung' tonight. 'Overshot' definitely makes no sense in that context. Thanks guys. Jim P.
