Re: looking for history of spitfire with serial number.....

Hello,

The RAAF site gives the date and name for the accident as -
" Landing accident 16/2/43 Pilot J Wellsman"
However there seems to be have been NO J. Wellsman in the RAAF.
There was a John Athol WELLMAN who was a Pilot Officer.

Then "Spitfire International" has the following entery for BR484.
"BR484 Spitfire F.Vc/trop ( Merlin 46); Became A58-27;
TOC/RAF 4.6.42 - To RAAF, arr Melbourne 18.10.42;
No.1 AD 21.10.42;
No.1 (F) Wing 9.11.42;
No.54 Sqn 9.11.42;
Undershot landing DARWIN 16.3.43 (Poss. F/Sgt. Wellin ).
No. 6 AD 10.2.44;
No.2 OTU 11.7.44;
No. 8 OTU 1.11.44;
No. 6 AD 28.11.45;
Cat E Storage 22.3.46;
SOC 22.5.46;
DAP 26.11.47 until 15.11.48.

From the CWGC Site there is a P/o/ James Charles Wellsman RAFVR 54 Sqdn age 22 , at rest in Adelaide River War Cemetery.
Date given as 30.6.43. Killed flying A58-36 (BR528) of 54 Sqdn s/d Darwin crashed 30 miles W of Batchelor on edge of the Great Reynolds River swamp 30.6.43. A/c not found until 20.8.43 and remains 29.9.43. So this is probably the pilot of A58-27.
