'Hack' Russell

Frank Ziegler's, 'The Story of 609 Squadron' mentions a 'Hack' Russell whose proper name is not given but who appears in one table as F/O I.B.N. Russell. Ziegler says he was awarded the DFC and refers to him as an American. He does not appear in the RAF list of Americans who fought in the BoB. Was Russell an American? Anyone have details on him and if an American possibly why he does not appear on the RAF list?
