Re: Crew of the KG51 Ju 88 (9K+AB) shot down on June 5, 1940
There are 4 KG-51 Ju-88's listed for that day in The Battle Of France Then & Now by Peter D Cornwell. Two are listed without their side numbers. The first from Stab I/KG-51 belly landed near l'Angelus at Presly and was burned out. All 4 crew members were captured unhurt (Feldwebel Diekert, Feldwebel Wagner, Unteroffizier Krichbaum & Gefreiter Schindler).
The other one listed without a side number was from 5./KG-51 and was shot down. Unteroffizier Schopf was killed. Feldwebel Doege baled out and landed unhurt but was then shot dead by a French officer. Unteroffizier Werner baled out but seperated from his parachute and fell to his death and Oberleutnant Kohl baled out and was discovered with badly injured legs west of Clairvaux three days later. The two aircraft that are listed with side numbers are 9K+HM and 9K+KM. |

Thank you! +AB indicates Stab of the I. Gruppe, so the crew consisted of Feldwebel Diekert, Feldwebel Wagner, Unteroffizier Krichbaum and Gefreiter Schindler.
Does anyone know their first names and functions? |

Recesswind:
In the EOE Data Base we have the following for this loss: "June 5, 1940: Stab I./KG51 Junkers Ju88A-1. Shot down by Capt Opulski and Sgt Krawczynski of DAT Romorantin during attack on Romorantin-Prunières and belly-landed near l’Angélus at Presly where burned out 2.00 p.m. Also attacked by S/Lt de Seynes, Sgt Delhoume, S/Lt Riss, and Adj Couffon of GC II/6 and S/Lt Wingert and Mr Desmazières of DAT Chteauroux. FF Fw Kurt Diekert, BM Fw Herbert Wagner, BF Uffz Walter Krichbaum, and HB Gefr Werner Schindler all captured unhurt – later released. Aircraft 100% write-off. Pierre-François Desmazières was a civilian flying operations with the Chteauroux defence flight." As you can see, there is no a/c code listed. Where did you get the information about this one being 9K+AB? Do you have photos of the crash or what is your source? Regards, |
