The very first picture and another different one inside the album: Looks like a Makhonine with telescopic wings, but with that engine it's not a Mak-10; which one then??? Mak-123?
Picture taken at Le Bourget? Villacoublay? On second picture we can recognize hangars of "Saconnay" type.

Well spotted! Not many persons today recognize the strange shape of the Makhonine wing. The photo you supply shows the prototype Model 10 in its original form at Villacoublay, which seems to have been its home base. However the original engine and fixed undercarriage proved to be a hindrance (much too underpowered) and the engine was switched to a Gnome Rhone 14K more than doubling the horsepower. At the same time the aircraft was modified with a retractable undercarriage and re-designated MAK 101. This aircraft was discovered by the Germans in 1941 still at Villacoublay and that is what you are looking at in the photoalbum.

Nice catch Ed. First time I see this aircraft in Luftwaffe markings!!:)

Hi Stig,

I think the first picture was in "Le Fanatique de l'aviation" when they published an article about that plane, long time ago... But I'm not sure. For Makhonine I was sure a 100%!
One first article (more?) was published in the old "Air Classic", during the 60s.

Trully good Site, the one from INA, about the " j'accuse " of Zola, it is interesting to note that first Zola was convince that Dreyfus was guilty, then he changed mind nd accuse an other officer Esterhazy, who amazingly was even "more" innocent than Dreyfus...

It's the first time we see an enlargement - of this well known picture - on the emblem... LDKdo... but which one?
