Need opinions on two books
 

I was looking at two books on Amazon and was wondering if anyone has read them and if they are worth getting as far as the details of the missions.

Fortress Ploesti: The Campaign To Destroy Hitler's Oil by Jay A. Stout (Kindle version $11.27)

Double Strike: The Epic Air Raids On Regensburg-Schweinfurt August 17,1943 by Edward Jablonski (printed 1974)

I recommend "The Schweinfurt-Regensburg Mission" by Martin Middlebook instead of Jablonski.

I second Heuser's recommendation. The Jablonski book is long on Allied first person stories but short on facts and the Luftwaffe perspective.

Thanks! I'll try Middlebrook but still would like to find out more about the Fortress Ploesti book.

Fortress Ploesti is a history of all the attacks on the Ploesti oil refinery system. It is 263 pages long, with 236 pages of text; the rest being two appendices, footnotes, bibliography and index.

The first 80 pages cover HalPro and Tidal Wave. There are then short chapters on most of the raids, including a chapter on British night raids. Not a lot of detail on the raids; damage done, aircraft lost, an anecdote or two. No list of losses, or participating aircraft. Chapters on the Germans, Rumanians and Bulgarians.

I would say a good overview of the missions, but not a lot of details. For that you will have to look elsewhere, which at this point I think means the original records.

Thanks John, Frank and Heuser. I'll go with the Middlebrook book for now. I'll look somemore on the Polesti raids. The 1943 raids are the main interest.
