D-ISBY not in pre-war civil registrar?
 

Am I correct in thinking that Germany skipped over D-ISBY in their sequence of pre-war civil registered aircraft?

If you look at Peter van Gogh's German registration list over on LEMB, you will not find a D-ISBY. There are only two found (so far) in the D-ISBx sequences, 'C was the Ar99V3 and 'O an Ar76A.

I don't believe that the D-Ixxx were applied in any sequence, but chosen at (apparently) random. However, there does appear to be a lot of Ar76As in this area of the list.

It was originally booked for one of a second batch of British Airways Concordes, but they were cancelled. I understood that it was left dormant, until I saw B-BOAJ (a Jungmann) at Duxford last year. It has been used, I forget on what, but the aircraft was sold abroad and re-registered.

I find quite enough modelling ideas from RAF squadron codes, and have a nice little backlog of 105 Sq Battle, Blenheims and Mosquitos for A.GB, plus an Canadian Lancaster AG.B. Add my wife and childrens' initials, and I could be kep happy for a while.

I don't remember (if I ever knew) David's middle initial, but would be glad to help him find a suitable RAF (or indeed 8th AF, 9th AF, or other suitable air forces) modelling subject. Finding the correct serial is usually the most difficult part.

Oh dear, C and I were avoided because of the possibilities of confusion. However, as the number of units grew late in the war they were pressed into use. D.CI will have been in the 576 BS, 392 BG, and DC.I in the 577th, also 392 BG. B-24s.

It should be possible to find DI on a wide range of RAF 80/90s fast jets.

Personnaly I did look for FR-ISBY & GR-ISBY but found nothing... :(

Or... did you find a G-ATSBY??

There are numerous mistakes in the LEMB database so you should only use this as a very basic check. For example many Klemm L 26 are listed as L 25, many He 72 listed are in fact Fw 44 and vice versa.

Now in the early 1930's there was a pattern of allocations but then you will find that there were some that didn't fit the pattern, which is a great pity.

With Ju 52 the sequence in werke number order appeared to be (one a/c) per Letter D-AB**, AF, AG, AH, AJ, AK, AL AM,AN,AP,AQ,AR,AS,AT,AV,AX and AZ, then AB etc. This is correct in many instances but when you expect say AN as the next allocation an AB appears, no AN but then AP. Then as time passed it got very erratic and many letters were out of order and other letters such as D-AA, D-AC etc appeared.

With He 45 for example the letter sequence appeared to be D-IG, IH,IJ,IK,IL,IM etc with say 3, 4 or more to the letter before moving to the next letter. It didn't start at IG but the section I looked at seemed to follow this pattern.

Does anyone have any more information on this subject.
