"Box like" device on Fw 58 nose.

This photo was sold on eBay and I´m very curious abou the box like device on its nose. Is it possible to be a camera or a weather machine??
Thanks in advance for any hint!

Fw 58 E

Hello Sergio,

according to

VOCKE, E. (2002): Die Wetterflieger. VDM Heinz Nickel. Zweibrücken.

both Fw 58 E BB+PV and BB+PW served with different Wetteraufstiegsstellen and Wetterflugstellen during their lifetime. So the box by all likelyhood is a cover for some kind of metereological equipment, perhaps a metereograph.

Many thanks Andreas and Stefan.

I have photos of two Hungarian metereological machines but they have no cover on the equipment.

Stefan, did the book you refers have any diagram of good photo from the equipments on the nose?

Hello, Sergio,

the answer is no, sorry.

I'm not sure wether this "box" is standard equipment of the Fw 58 E or serves some special purpose. I've checked some other photos of Fw 58 Es and found that the outside gimmicks differ from plane to plane. One has a metereograph in a cagelike structure below the nose, another one some kind of probe on nose tip and wing strut. Others show no visible extras at all. The E with the probe is the only pic I could find that shows the right side of an Fw 58 E and there is no "box" installed.

Best regard

Stefan
