Callletter of the Whitley Z6881 (78 sqaudron)

I looking for the callletter of the Whitley Z6881 (78 sqaudron). It crashed on 7-9-1941 near the Dutch town of Bergum.

Sorry I did look for you!

But it seems that 78 Sqn was one of those that didn't record individual call signs in its Operations Log. Respected aviation historians WR Chorley and MJ Bowyer have both listed 78 Sqn aircraft but neither have had any luck with a full list of individual codes for this Sqn.

Your best hope is to search for a photo on the web or in any books on RAF or Bomber Command or Middleton St George.

Never give up hope though, I got a code letter last year of this site which I had been after since 1991!

Is there a 78 Sqn specialist out there>

Hi there.

I'm in the same boat, having researched a whitley from 78 that was lost over the North Sea in November 1941....I know someone very knowledgeable about 78...but he couldn't help me.

It seems that aircraft in 78 were recorded only by their serial numbers and not by their individual call signs/ codes...

You're best bet is to try the 78 squadron association....if it is still going. Perhaps an old chap out there may have flown the same whitley..and can check his log book....stranger things have happened....

Best of luck!!!!
