Hi,

Can anyone provide information on the unit and operational history of Feldwebel Hans Pirkl?

He seems very old for a fighter pilot.

Not that old by German standards. My uncle was 44 when he took over 9. JG3 during the BoB.

Not sure what role he had when he died?

Was he a ferry pilot or test pilot or pilot in training?

Most probably he was a works pilot doing the Factory test before handing over the aircraft to the Luftwaffe.

Fw. Hans Pirkl was (had been) a pilot in 6./JG 2. He was wounded on 21 July 41, possibly during Circus 54, and bailed out of his F-2 near Frévent. He did not rejoin the "Richthofen" and served as a Wiener Neustadt test pilot until his fatal accident on 19 March 1942. A close comrade of Siegfried Schnell etc. Cf. Erik Mombeek 'In the skies of France' Vol II.
