#5 The Hs126 belongs to 2 (H) 31 which according to Holm went from France to Russia. So my guess this is a scrapyard at a train station either in France or Germany. BTW the emblem gets me: it's 4.JG27 yet the number looks yellow rather than white, or is it white that has yellowed?????

Re: 4/03 - Bf109s on eBay

Chris Chris Chris...

according to the same site 2.(H)/31 was in Trikkala in April 1941. Trikala (Trikkala ?) is a city in Western Thessaly, in Greece then. But the site is so full of orthographic errors... or different orthograph: Bryansk, Briansk, Brjansk just an example I have in my head...

Anyway, on one picture we can see yew trees and the guys are almost naked.
We can guess the picture has been taken later during the year and these planes are mere scraps waiting for transportation and repairs.

For Yellow 2 ... We have seen something like that 4. Sta and Yellow number last year, haven't we? Must check.

But Chris you did good looking for that 2.(H)/31 ... This is the proof we need to know more than what we think enough to our purpose. Very helpful.

Cheers, Franck.

PS: Following Trikala, the unit was in Brieg; where the hell is it?

Hi Franck, here the link to Brieg. Indeed they had Aufklaerungsgruppe 31 as guests. It was in Silesia, now Poland. Referring to Holms site: even our Russian friends do not exactly know how to spell Brjansk or other russian locations. Researching JG54 history I can tell you how difficult it is to figure out the names of their airfield names. I would agree to your opinion about the location where the photos have been taken, as Greece (conifer or yew trees in the background not likely germany or northern france)

cheers
Horst

Re: 4/03 - Bf109s on eBay

Hey Horst.

There is two ways to run on this aspect:
1/ Most simple: Choose an orthograph an keep it all along the text (pages) for not inducing the reader to think two or three different places did exist.
2/ Wikipedia is giving the right orthograph in every language you want.

Some places (in Michael Holm site) are rare enough - if they do exist - that when you google for, the only links you can get are Luftwaffe related.... :D. Bourges-Marsan for example....

Concerning your difficulty; just right click on brownser window and copy, then paste; doesn't work?

And yes, you're right Yews are conifers.

Tschüss, Franck.

Hello all,

I came across to a similar pic from the scene with the station in the past.If i remember well, at the back it was written: Larissa train station, June 1941.Larissa is a major point for train traffic from south to north within Greece.

I hope this helps.

regards

Thank you Aviator,

Of course that makes sense; very helpful indeed.

Re: 4/03 - Bf109s on eBay

Thanks Franck I did a search for Trikala and couldn't find it....made an assumption that it was Finland as it sounded Finnish.... dangerous to make assumptions. Bearing in mind each national groups attempts to pronounce each others languages it's a miracle that there is any uniformity in spelling.

Re: 4/03 - Bf109s on eBay

Hi Chris,

In fact I first had the same thought & googled without faith. But thanks to you, you did put the cherry on the cake before I made it!
Concerning the "uniformity" I agree I must cool down some time to time; I know me and I'm a perfectionnist.
Doesn't mean too that we haven't to take care about what we write for potential readers and that we haven't to check because it was written on whatever published book; It's what I call the "published effect", the Holly Grail!

For example, the Kracker list (Yeah again) take care about that and does point existing variations.
We can accept, too, a lost report written with a bad orthograph; I'm not going to ask the guy to write Pihen-Lez-Guisnes as it was written during the XIXth century; I'm not going to ask the same guy to check Trikkala or Trikala but I'm expecting the guy who is publishing the information to check if this makes sense.

And, last, of course Michael Holm isn't guilty of that situation; he did a wonderful and useful job and I'm sure he passed enough time, not to stop every step. His site is just in front line being the only place where we can check immediately.

Cheers, Franck.
