Mystery Aircraft Part?
1 Attachment(s)
Hello All :),
Can some kind knowledgeable Soul please put me out of my misery if possible? I have had this piece of Aircraft for a number of years now & would like to know what actual type it is from & exactly what is it? I was told whose Aircraft it was from & what Type but I suspect I may have been led down the Garden Path so will not divulge it at this stage - But it is or should be of WWII origin? Anyway I have attached a picture of the offending Item - It is made entirely of a Light Alloy approximately 5 Inches in Diameter/5 Inches in Length with a Thick raised Band of Alloy roughly in the centre of the piece & both ends being flared out looking rather like a nozzle from a Rocket Motor. There are 2 Groups of Markings - On one side there is clearly stamped AM1530 & on the other which seems to have a hole (Bullet?) between the Numbers and is badly damaged so they could either at a guess be: S004100/8004100/SU004100/8U004100 or 5U004100 - This may or may not be the complete sequence of Numbers/Letters due to the said Damage & limitations of my Eyesight! Any Ideas to this Mystery? Many Thanks - Keith  |

Re: Mystery Aircraft Part?
British landing Gear? - Could very well be?
Alright I will come clean & say that I bought this Part some Years ago as it was stated as coming from the Crash Site of Hawker Hurricane P2805 which was an Aircraft of No 1 Squadron - shot down on 19th May 1940 - Chateau Thierry Area - one of Paul Richeys Hurricanes in the Battle of France. This may be a complete Lemon of course as there was no proof as such only the sellers word but being very interested in No 1 Squadron I had to have! :o It was stated in his book that he forced landed this Aircraft into a field but other Articles say that he baled out? - I think that I remember viewing a web-site about one of his Hurricanes being excavated at a site in France - Not sure if it was this one though? Just thought that I could maybe get some more Information from the Numbers stamped on it? Could very well be Undercarriage related -I thought that it may be some Part from the SU Carb? Any more Ideas? |
Re: Mystery Aircraft Part?
It is either the a 'collar' from the end of the induction manifold or else one of the twin venturi for a carburretor. I favour the latter, but would be good to have other views. Actually...on second thoughts, I am convinced as to the latter since some of the part numbers are prefixed SU, the company who were the carb manufacturers for the RR Merlin.

My suggestion confirmed, then!

Re: Mystery Aircraft Part?
Smashing! - Then this could well be from P2805 then after all! :)
If so Andy were you not one of the Team who excavated this crash site? Do you remember anything such as Parts found etc? Many Thanks All - Keith :) |
Re: Mystery Aircraft Part?
Keith
Yes, I was part of that recovery team. A number of the team members ended up with parts from this aircraft, notably the late Al Brown I think. Certainly I would say that the item you have must have been found during the excavation and I cannot see any particular reason to doubt its provenance. |
Re: Mystery Aircraft Part?
