Seeking info on the badly flak-damaged Ju87B-1, WNr0236, L1+JW, from 12.(St)/LG1 during the Polish Campaign
 

Hello,

There was a famous incident during the PC on Sept. 5, 1939, when Ju87B-1 #0236, L1+JW, flying a combat mission out of Grieslienen in East Prussia, took what appears to be a direct 37mm flak hit through the starboard fuselage cross, which exploded inside the fuselage and blew outward the rear fuselage on the port side. Lucky for the crew the tail didn't fall off. This plane was photographed with its crew after a subsequent belly landing. At least two photos exist of the port side damage and one of the starboard. My questions are:

1) Need names and ranks of the pilot and gunner aboard this aircraft on that mission.
2) Need location where the Stuka made a belly landing away from its base.
3) Need account of this incident, which was probably publicized in the German press of the time.
4) Need further photos that would allow a full color profile created for this a/c, including photos showing the forward fuselage, including the nose and the front of the wheel spats.

We have the PC KTB for the unit, but lack this information to complete the story and profile of this a/c, crew and incident.

According to Taghon it might be bei Laski. Crew Lt. Heinrich Kohl/Uffz. Jacob Leuck.

in Emmerling's Luftwaffe nad Polska 1939 pt.3 there is the pilot's report about the crash. But it is written, that this Ju 87 was shot down by polish fighters :confused:. It crashed near Laski, crew Lt. Kohl/Uffz. Leuck.

Good lead, but it doesn't pan out. Reading both Taghon's and Emmerling's accounts, the latter claims that there were two a/c that didn't make it back to base that day, 236, the a/c in question, and 267. The latter appears, as Bf110 says, to be the crew of 267, which force-landed near Laski and was set afire by its crew before escape and evading back to German lines over the next couple of days. So we're back to square one with my questions about W.Nr.0236, L1+JW. It's possible that L1+JW belly landed at another German airbase. The KTB says that 0236 failed to return to Grieslienen, which was it's take off base.
