RAF colors for MTO
Hi all
I am wondering what colors were used on RAF and SAAF Liberator B-24 bombers in 1944. Seems like upper surfaces are brown, no scheme, and lower are grey? But which one of the RAF colors were those? Thanks for answers Peter |
Re: RAF colors for MTO
US Olive Drab uppersurfaces. These Lend-Lease aircraft were not repainted before service. There was considerable variety in the precise shades of OD used, sometimes on the same individual aircraft (notably C-47s and B-17s, with significant subcontracting of parts). Some of the OD paints used are known to fade to a brown.

Thanks Graham, and what about lower surfaces?

Similarly USAAF colour. Strictly they should have been Neutral Gray, and this was seen on early B-24s, but the majority appear to have been in a lighter grey. The likeliest colour appears to have been ANA602 Light Grey, but there appears to be some dispute about the use of ANA colours by the USAAF.
