RAF fighters losses Northern France
Hello,
I am looking for a list of the RAF fighters lost in northern France between 6th and 12th August 1944. After straffing a train with russian POW on Marle Station, RAF fighter ( Hurricane ??)damaged by Flak, belly landed near Sons-et-Ronchères and Marle (Aisne). The pilot was safe and was helped by a french resistant. Thanks Phil |
Re: RAF fighters losses Northern France
Dear Phil,
I'm not sure the Hurricane was still in use over France in the summer of 1944 - well not for front line straffing missions anyway. By far the best book to get hold of to start your research is RAF Fighter Command Losses 1944-45 Volume 3 by Norman Franks, Midland Publishing, ISBN 1 85780 093 1 (Vol 1 covers 1939-41, Vol 2 covers 1942-43) Aircraft of the Many by MJF Bowyer, PSL Publications is also useful as it lists all the RAF aircraft available on 6th June 1944 but also gives dates of losses at a later date too |
Re: RAF fighters losses Northern France
I'd have expected it to be in the new 2TAF history, Vol.1. I can't find anything matching your description but someone with better knowledge of French geography might.
But yes, surely not a Hurricane. |
Re: RAF fighters losses Northern France
Hello,
Thanks to the huge database of a friend, it could match this one lost on the 1st July 1944: P-51 B (S/N 43-12455) of 357FG/362FS lost 1 km North of Sons-et-Ronchères; 1st Lt Don W. VOGEL (EVD) (MACR 6552) Are you making some reasearches in this area? Hope this help. ClinA-78 |
