BFGr. 196 on 28.7.1942
Hi all,
I would like to ask some questions about this unit: 1. base of 5./BFGr. 196 - at http://www.ww2.dk/air/seefl/bfgr196.htm is mentioned: 4.41 - 6.43 Brest-Hourtin Ar 196 but Hourtin was near the Bordeaux as far as I was able to find... So where the unit was based in July-August 1942? 2. there was a dogfight among RAF Coastal Command Wellington (311/W) and two Ar 196 (I believe from 5./BFGr. 196), believed to damaged or shot down (ORB 311 SQ) but on http://www.ww2.dk/oob/bestand/see/b5bfgr196.html there is no loss of Ar 196 in July... Are there any information about this in the Luftwaffe records? 3. would be possible to identify the particular losses of Ar 196 from the August 1942? I will be very thankful for any additional infromation TIA Pavel |
Re: BFGr. 196 on 28.7.1942
During July and August 1942 the Bordfl.Staffel 5./196 was stationed in Brest-Süd (Poulmic-Lanveoc) with detachments in Hourtin. During July 1942 I have no registered losses of this unit. In August 1942 I have three losses, one on 5.8.42 and one on 31.8.42 both in combat with Beaufighters, and one crashed on landing Poulmic on 17.8.42.

The following link http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww2/h/21/2 includes the following Arado 196 from 5./Bordflieger Gruppe 196
6W+EN; 6W+IN; T3+OM; GW+CK The above does not answer your question but thought it may be of interest. Kind regards Ross |

Ross thanks for interesting link - to see how the enemy planes look like.
Seaplanes - my big thanks for very useful information. May I ask you for the source of these information? I would like also to ask from the opposite point of view - are there any known claims of 5./196 against RAF CC - particularly Wellingtons on 28.7.42 and 18.8.42? TIA Pavel |
Re: BFGr. 196 on 28.7.1942
There are no claims for 28 Jul 42 although a 311 Sqn ac had a combat with 2 x Ar 196s. On 18 Jul 42, Ofw Jost of 5/196 claimed a Wellington but so did Stolle of III/JG 2 whilst another 311 sqn ac reported a combat lasting 14 minutes with 2 x Ju 88

Re: BFGr. 196 on 28.7.1942
Thanks Chris, do you have any more details about the claims for 18.8.?
I have no details for the Jost at all unfortunately. I have the information from you book about Stolle - his own reminiscence but when I compare the british sources and the time from for example Tony Wood claims list it does not fits - the claim is one hour earlier - I was also checking the time difference and still there is one hour difference... so I am trying to find if there was another possibility or maybe only typo in the historical documents. Thank you Jim!
So it seems that the claims by 311 Sq on 28.7.42 were too promising regarding to the fact. Pavel |

Pavel
I am afraid that I would have to agree with you Chris |
