Ju-88A Wr 0746 1 (F) /120 Faroe Crash
 

Hello,

I am trying to confirm the correct names of the crew of the above Ju-88 crash at Lokki, Faroe Isles on 18th August 1941. according to one source I have:

Oblt : Walter Budden.
Lt : Bodo Moller.
Uffz: Herbert Schlichting.
Fw: Adolf Kuhne.

But another source says:

Oblt: Walter Budden.
Lt : Moeller.
Uffz: Herbert Schlichting.
LG: Adolph Bold

can anyone confirm correct spellings etc of those in red lettering ?

Also does anyone have a photo of any of these airmen? And/ Or know where they are buried? All died on the mountain on Faroe Isles.

They are buried in Grove/Denmark.

Oblt. Walter Budden, born 25.9.1912 Nürnberg
Fw. Adolf Kühne, born 16.19.1917 Sülfeld

All buried Grove, Block 2, Grave 5/76. Apparantly a collective grave.

Are you researching Northern Islands accidents?

Searching known Ju 88 losses on that date I found this:

OPS (F) mis (100%) unk location (Scapa-Flow) belived shot down by <enemy> fighters [was hit in one engine by two RN/FAA Grumman Martlet Mk.I fighters of 804 SQ (flown by Lt. L.V. Carter and Sub/Lt. Parke, off from Hatston) and crash landed in bog near Loch Skail] 25.12.1940 (F Lt. Karl Schipp, B Fw. Heinr. Schreiber, BF Uffz. Joh. Spörtl and BS Obgefr. Karl Rotter mis)(rep as Ju 88 F 535 in losses) [see Barrett Tillman: ´Wildcat Aces of World War 2´ P.69 {in Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No. 3.} ; likely first Ju 88 downed by American made fighter]

I belive this is the same?

Thanks for your comments.

I have 4 photos of the JU-88 at Sandwick, Orkney that was shot down by Parke & Carver, and have been to the scene. It would be interesting to find the crew who were all PoW, and any photo`s of them.

We have been in touch before I think re an inquiry on the RAF Commands forum, I think it as you I told about my grandfather who was with the Territorials at Reykjavik.

My research at present reaches as far as Faroes with my Islands Project, but I may stop at Shetland, and produce a seperate book on the Faroes crashes.

Have you done any research on crashes on Iceland? I have a friend who wrote about a B-24 crash over there.

and I apologize my odd question, but do You happened to know the etymology of the name Lokki? I asked this because gull/seagull is lokki in Finnish.

A little off topic! But I found this:

Lokki

Found in Old Danish as Lokki and in Old Swedish as the by-name Lokke. Derived from OW.Norse lokkr "curl, lock of hair." Runic examples include the nominative forms lki, [luki].

On this website. It does not sound as good as your definition of Gull, and yours sounds more like the true meaning of a Mountain .

Yes, my question was way off topic but thanks for answering it. The Old Danish explanation sounds OK to me. One learns new things every day. Having spent a couple weeks on Outer Hebrides and Iceland a few years ago I knew that there are plenty of seabirds there so I began to wonder the coindicence of the name Lokki.
