what happens with P51D canopy as pilot bails out?

Hi all,

that question about the P51D:

as the pilot bails out, do the canopy stay attached on the plane (in the crash) or does it be dettached or "ejected" (automatically? or with pilots help?) from the plane and ...with lot of luck found some years later at some distance of the plane crash-site?

Thanks for any help,

Mathias

The canopy had to be jettisoned by pilot

I don't know if this link will copy, but the bailout procedure is here. Step 1 is slow the plane, step 2 is jettison the canopy. etc...

Does the same hold true for Malcolm Hood equipped B's/C's?

Yes, the hood could be jettisoned. Search for "jettison" on the page below.

Hi,

according with the bailout procedure described in the pilots manual above in same thread (link), could it be possible to give an estimation of the delay between the decision of bailout and the jump out of the plane?
Pilot had to:

- lower seat and head and then
- eject canopy
- disconect headset and oxygene
- open seat security belt and shoulders harness, throught it away on the sides
- get with feets on the seat and then
- jump...

can that all take about 5 seconds? or 10 ? 15?

No idea at all...
Thanks for any possible idea...

Mathias

You may find the answer on any film of the P-51 bale out at Duxford yesterday, 10 July 2011.
