What's the meaning of the German word "Peiler"?
Hello,
I have heard about "Kzw./Lgw. Peiler" equipment used by German ground troops to give directions to the Ju 52. How to understand the German word "Peiler"? Was it just a standard radio situated at a known location, transmitting a specific Morse signal (radio beacon?)? Or rather a radio direction finder? Thanks in advance! R |
Re: What's the meaning of the German word "Peiler"?
The translation would be Kurzwelle (short wave) / Langwelle (longwave) Peiler (direction-finder). Peiler is the short-form in German language for a Peilgerät.
In your particular case it could be a device to search for a certain frequency on the short- and longwave-band. The term peilen is also used in the German nautical navigation. With a sextant you (peil)to a certain star to undertake navigational measurments for the course of your vessel. Hope this helps All the best Horst Weber |
