Lt. Schwendler, III./SG 10

The "Einsatztagesmeldung" of Lfl.Kdo.6 for 23.04.1945 reports the following loss;

Lt. Schwendler (Ritterkreuzträger), III./SG 10, gefallen.
Fw 190, nach Flakvolltreffer Aufschlagbrand in 60888.

Does anybody have more info on Lt. Schwendler or this loss? I can not find him as RK-Träger or even DRK-Träger....

Thanks,

John

You have a mystery there!

We have no such guy in our database by that or similar name. I searched by III./SG 10 and no one by a similar name. The same applies to Rk holders.

Nothing in the Kracker database either.

Anyone got any ideas?

Could this be identical with Lt. Karl-Georg Gschwendtner, born 26.06.1918 and presumed killed on 05.04.1945?

Hello John,

this is as well my idea :-) We know how often are misspellings in KTB Luftflotte 6 because of decyphring or based on phone conversations :-)

Best

Re: Lt. Schwendler, III./SG 10

Michal,

I agree. There is imho no known grave for Lt. Gschwendtner and he probably was listed as killed in action on the date last heard of by his relatives. Saw that in many occasions of JG 6 pilots. Listed as MIA end of March 1945 but actually killed in late April 1945.

Perhaps somebody knows exactly where 60888 is? I did not check.

Thanks,

John

Re: Lt. Schwendler, III./SG 10

Einsatz was flown in Raum Brünn (Brno) - Troppau (Opava). In total III./SG 10 flew with 12 Fw 190 from Prerau a/f (Prerov). I think we can be sure this is Lt. Gschwendtner.

Cheers,

john

Re: Lt. Schwendler, III./SG 10

There were strong ground attacks against armour detached to Pliyev Army. It was action during first stage of battle of Brno (Brünn). There is strong evidence according to local chronicle that Gschwendtner (Schwendler) could be killed nearby Šitbořice which is not so far from given locantion (Planquadrat).
