Kazimierz Lukaszewicz, July/August 1940.

Hallo all,

Can anyone please give me the correct RAF rank and spelling for 76761 Kazimierz Lukaszewicz ? Including the 302 Squadron online ORB his RAF rank is usually given as Pilot Officer. However 'MEN of the BATTLE of BRITAIN' (1989) by Kenneth Wynn records his rank as Flying Officer and his unit in July/August 1940 as 303 Squadron. Was the latter rank given to him after his death on 12 August 1940 ? I have also seen his surname spelt differently.

Regards,

Martin Gleeson.

Hi Martin,

According to http://www.polishsquadronsremembered.com/ , he was P/O with the 302 Sqn.

Martin,
according to the book "Poles in defence of Great Britain" by Robert Gretzyngier i Wojtek Matusiak, Kazimierz Lukaszewicz is credited with either Pilot Officer rank (pages 41 & 42) or Flying Officer rank (the list of fallen Polish pilots on the page 538) in 501 Squadron!

However on the list of P.A.F. personnel compiled by T. Krzystek, he is enlisted as Flying Officer as well.
Perhaps me may have been given his F/O rank posthumously!
I hope that it is of help to you ;-)

Regards,
Gregory

Although Pilot Officer Kazimierz Łukaszewicz 76761 was considered for 302 Squadron, his posting remained only the name on the list. Most of the Polish pilots from that list were posted to other squadrons. It was in fact Pilot Officer Marian Łukaszewicz P-0160 who joined 302 Squadron in July 1940. After he crashed Hurricane P3217 on 29th of July he had to undertake further training and disappeared from this unit.

Hallo and thanks to Michal, Gregory and Peter.

Well I am very surprised by your answers, and grateful too. I did not know about Marian Lukaszewicz as he is not listed as qualifying for the Battle of Britain clasp.

So if I understand correctly it was P/O Marian L. who had the accident on 29 July 1940 with 302 Squadron. While Kazimierz L. was a P/O with 501 Squadron until his death on 12 August 1940, and then perhaps promoted to F/O after his death ?

Regards to all and thanks once more,

Martin.

Marian Łukaszewicz is not listed as he didn't fly operationally during the Battle.
Yes, it was him who had the accident with 302 Squadron.
