71 Eagle Squadron aircraft IDs
I have a couple nice photos of a 71 ES Hurricane XR*A s/n Z378___(?) and Spit MK V XR*Y.
Can anyone out there complete the code for the Hurricane, know the Spits or either of their assigned pilots. I can post the photos if you'd all like. |
Re: 71 Eagle Squadron aircraft IDs
Hello Jack,
Z378* can only as far as I know , be Z3781, this Hurricane was used by 71 Sqdn and passed to 133 Sqdn crashing on the isle of Man in October 41. Another XR-A was P3884. As for the Spitfire XR-Y ? This could be one of several I expect. Alex |
Re: 71 Eagle Squadron aircraft IDs
Hi
I had a look in my files and although I do not have any information on XR-Y, I have serial numbers and radio call letters on many other 71 Squadron Spitfires. I have many on the other two squadrons as well. These mostly date from the Dieppe Raid time period. Bluey |

Re: 71 Eagle Squadron aircraft IDs
Hello Joe,
Maybe a bit off-topic but perhaps you've filed the call letter of Spitfire W3509 which was lost 17th September 1941. The body of the pilot P/O T. P. McGerthy washed ashore on 20th October 1941 near Castricum, The Netherlands, nearby my place of living. Thanks in advance, Hans Nauta |
