Queston about an RAF fighter pilot 1940

Hi Guys,

An old friend of mine was an RAF fighter pilot in the battle of Britain 1940. His name was Harold J. Ovens. He was a Group Captain when I knew in NATO back in 1974. I was wondering if there was a list of pilots who served in 1940? Tips, suggestions on how and where to look would very helpful.

Thanks

There is no one of that name posted on the Battle of Britain Roll of Honour or Memorial:
http://www.bbm.org.uk/pilots-o.htm
http://www.raf.mod.uk/bob1940/roll.html

The nearest is Sgt. H OWEN.

You may want to check how he spelled his name.
It is also possible that he has been missed from the list.

if you search for the name H. J. Ovens on the London Gazette there is one long carreer officer shows up

Flt. Sgts.
9th Dec. 1943.
571035 Harold John OVENS (53687).

This listing indicates this airmans promotion too officer in late 1943, from being a Flight Sergeant he became commishionied as a Acting Pilot Officer.
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/search and search for the 53687 number.

His NCO serial number above, indicates probably a former apprentice airman who enlisted somethime/anytime after 1926.

Your friend might not be this man at all but since his promotions are listed all the way up to 1972 at least, I assume it is.
