I./KG55 He. IIIH G1+EK 23/08/40 Damaged.
Friday 23 August, a trio of fighter Blenheims take-off to defend Thorney Island against an attack by Heinkels, they drove them off.
Pilot Officer Jackson-Smith attacks one of the He III's writing, Aerodrome Protection - HE III attacked, 2000 rounds. I therefore wonder if the aircraft was from I./KG55 and if so is there a small percentage chance that it may have been the a/c flown by Obw Heinze and Obw Weis that force landed near Le Havre. Having spoken with 'Jacko' he recalls 'he left it - in a bad way heading for France' Yours Faithfully, Andy Bird |
Re: I./KG55 He. IIIH G1+EK 23/08/40 Damaged.
9 He 111s of I/KG 55 took off at 1415-1440 hrs to attack such targets as Banbury and Twyford with 2 force-landing at Octeville on the return. The combat with the He 111 was 1907 hrs which would not match but which would match with 6 ac of II/KG 55 which operated in the Hamble/Tangmere area (TO 1805 hrs; 1705 hrs UK time) and although they noted lots of fighters near Portsmouth, got back unscathed. Bottom line is it was an over-optimistic claim by 235 Sqn
