826 Sqn ditched Albacore 11/09/40

An Albacore of 826 Squadron force landed after being damaged by German fighters on 11 Sept 1940. Lt A S. Downes was slightly wounded, and together with S/Lt C. R. Mallett, both rescued by a MTB.

Does any one know where I can find the time of the ditching or port the MTB docked at ?

Yours faithfully,

Andy Bird

Hi Andy,

Do you know where the aircraft ditched? From that you may be able to work out which MTB flotillas were based near that area and from that you may be able to find what you are looking for. I know all naval ships kept logbooks but I wouldn't know how to access them or indeed if they were retained and stored somewhere.

Albacore I L7117. Badly damaged in attack by Bf109s of 1./JG52 and III./JG53 during anti-shipping strike north-west of Calais and ditched in the Channel south-east of Dover 5.50 p.m. Lt Allan Sawbridge Downes wounded and Sub-Lt Conrad Richard Mallett unhurt – both rescued by MTB and landed at Dover, (TAG) NA1 James Alexander Moffat Stevens missing. Aircraft F4K 100% write-off.
