RAF 1940 - Observer Corps

I search clarification how work in RAF navigation map system which use Observer Corps/ AA unit in 1940

For example - 312 Searchlight Battery RA Stationed at RE Camp South Benflee report a "Spitfire crash on place M184093"

Where on map is M184093 ? M is it direction and 184093 distance from Observer point????

Hi Markus,

If you telephone DORIS at the RAF Museum London they should be able to help you.

1. You refer to a position given by an AA Searchlight Bty stationed at South Benfleet in 1940 and I attach part of a map indicating that the 'M' relates to the 'M' Square.

2. Referring to Sheet 108 (extract attached), your coordinates 184 and 093 of your 6 figure reference refer to the 18 09 square and the 3rd figure '4' and 6th figure '3' refer to the tenths in the 18 09 square.

I have marked the square with a blue arrow and approximated the tenths and pencilled in a cross.

Try also Andy Saunders on this forum.

I hope you can trace further information and possibly some accounts of the crash.

Regards Mark
