Help with Luftwaffe acronyms
1 Attachment(s)
Hello,
I am trying to decipher some acronyms relating to the Luftwaffe. Could anyo anyone please tell me what the following stood for: Norddeutsche Wi. V. Fl. Gr. Br. Fl. Ho. Br. Wi Tn Teil Lu. Park Br. I believe 'Fl' stands for 'Flieger', 'Gr' stands for 'Gruppe' and 'Ho' stands for 'Horst'. Could 'Br' stand for an airfield in Northern Germany? Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Andy |
Re: Help with Luftwaffe acronyms
Norddeutsche = North German
Wi. V. = Wirtschaftsverwaltung Fl. Gr. Br. = Fliegergruppe Br. (Braunschweig?) Fl. Ho. Br. = Fliegerhorst Br. (Braunschweig?) Wi Tn Teil = Wirtschafts-Technische-Teil Lu. Park Br. = Luftpark Br. (Braunschweig?) The above is educated guesswork. Here is what is problematic: 1. There was never a Luftpark located at Braunschweig as far as I know. I thought it might be Brüssel (Brussels) but the Luftpark for Luftgau Belgien-Nordfrankreich was located in Antwerp. ****Postscript: there was a Luftpark at Fliegerhorst Brandis/18 km E of Leipzig from 1938-41. So this is the one being referred to. 2. "Ho" was not the abbreviation for Horst, but nothing that is was an abbreviation for seems to fit the context. 3. "Tn" was not the abbreviation for Technische. TN was the abbreviation for Technische Nothilfe, but "Tn" was not used by the Wehrmacht. 4. "Lu." was not the abbreviation for Luft. Accordingly, these stampings seem to have been made by someone who didn't want to bother looking up the official required abbreviations so they made up their own. Incidently, the stamping reads from bottom to top, from the general to the very specific. A Luftpark being very large with 1,200 military and civilian workers, and a Wirtschaftsverwaltung being a small supply section with maybe 6 to 8 people. L. |

Hello Larry,
I am very grateful for your reply. I have added another photo in that shows the 'Norddeutsche' markings. I thought I had attached this to the original post but it appears not to have 'stuck'. The markings are in a jacket made in 1935, right at the very start of the time of the Luftwaffe proper. Maybe abbreviations and acronyms were just formulating and the stamp maker got many of them wrong! Thansk again, Andy |

Norddeutsche Bekleidungs-Werkstätten, G.m.b.H. = North German Uniform Workshops, Inc.
I agree with your comment regarding the evolution of Wehrmacht abbreviations. 1935 was indeed pretty early in the game and the authorized glossary of abbreviations had probably not yet been formulated. |
