British naval grid codes

Hello

I am researching on the naval battle in the Kattegat and Skagerrak during operation "Weserübung" during April-May 1940.

However, I have problems with the position codes of the British submarines. They consist of a four letter and four number code: for example: MBRR 5527 (HMS Narwhal 12.4.40) og MBCU 5514 (HMS Truant 9.4.40).

It seems that the grid codes were also used by the Coastal Command.

I understand, that the four numbers nominates minutes N and E, and the letters degrees N and E. But I have no means of placing the letter codes on a map.

I would be very thankful, if anybody could help me to get a map of the Scandinavian area - or at least can tell me the exact position of the letter codes.

Best regards
Jens

Hello,

the same question about RN/CC grid system.

I read the following thread
http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...tude-positions
so I understand the principle. But maybe relevant documents/maps have become available since then?

Many quadrates are interesting, for example:

RNXU3510 14.May.41
DPQJ1728 1.Jun.41

Best regards,
Andrey

Other possible sites to try:

Naval-history.net

U-boat.net

I've found both these very helpful for all sorts of naval information.
