Question about insignia carried by Stab II.(S)/LG2 Hs123s during the PC and later
Hello,
For the profile work for the EOE Polish Campaign volume, I'm trying to determine if the aircraft of the Stab of II.(S)/LG2 carried any unit insignia at that time. All three squadrons, 4, 5 and 6 are known to have carried insignias that date back to well before that campaign, but the Gruppenstab is not represented in Ketley & Rolfe's "Luftwaffe Emblems." However, insignia #467, identified as "SchG2", and described as "A stylised black bird with spread wings superimposed onto an ace of diamonds 1942-1943 Bf109E" has been observed in at least two photos on the forward fuselages of Hs123s during the Western Campaign of May-June 1940. Could this be a heretofore unknown insignia for the Gruppenstab of II.(S)/LG2 during the 1940 period, and could this insignia have been in use on a/c of that unit as far back as the Polish Campaign? It would make a lot of sense that the Gruppenstab did have an insignia on their a/c as far back as the PC, since all three squadrons did have and carry unit insignias at that time. Who can help? Regards, |
