Spit IX NM845. 4 sqdn SAAF
 

Hi Guys.
I need some help.
Included is a Spit MKIX 'KJ E'that belonged to 4 sqdn SAAF during the last stages of the War. The serial, partially visible, looks like NM845. Less likely NH845.
Problem is that no such serial no is known to exist if one goes according to all the printed gen on Spit's serials.
Any ideas.??

From Robertson, NH845 was a Spitfire F or FR.XIV.

From the same source, NM845 was a cancelled Spitfire FR.XIV. It was originally an order for 70 aircraft from Vickers Armstrong at Chattis Hill, with only the first 10 listed as actually built. I have seen other cancelled blocks where there is some confusion between what was actually built and what was not. This may be another case.

How about NH345? That falls into the F. IX series, which this airplane clearly belongs to.

Robertsons says "NH345...e/fld on app NicosiaCyprus 19-10-46"

So the 8 must be actually a 3. I agree that is the most likely serial.
This is one of the rare 4 sqdn Spits that shows both the sqdn badge and red fin.
Many that I have seen only has one of the two visible.
