Me 109G-5/AS role

Hello all,

I was wondering what the main purpose of the Me 109G-5/AS was? Was it to provide topcover/escort for FW 190's on bomber killing missions?

As always, many thanks.

As it has been ascertained in this thread...
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=27480
the modification with the DB 605AS engine (and replacement with the Erla hood) meant the loss of any pressurized cockpit capabilities for the G-5 which, although on paper retained its designation, in practice become virtually identical to a G-6/AS.

I guess that thus no special use was probably meant for it, at least no different from the one foreseen for G-6/ASs.

I will echo what Veltro says: there was no special purpose for the G-5/AS except to provide airframes for conversion to the AS engine as was done with the G-6. The G-5 production had been terminated as there was no longer a need/call for the pressurized cabine, per se. There were airframes around. Many of them were converted by Erla-Antwerp. The use of the G-5 airframe would not disrupt the on-going G-6 production.
