Re: The 5th Fighter Command in World War II

I just got my copy. A large format book, 447 pages long (not 352, as advertised), it really looks impressive. Unfortunately many photos are of poor quality, cropped and grainy, including some well-known shots, which seems a little strange, since I'm sure they are available at NARA at higher resolution. Also color profiles, as usually in most Schiffer books, look terribly amateurish (they should get someone like Janusz Swiatlon for that job). Anyway, I'm sure the text itself will more than make up for these shortcomings.

What is worse is that the same photos appear more than once and identified as different pilots....

Cheers

Based on some earlier books by William Wolf, those photo problems etc. are probably on the shoulders of the author. He e.g. has admitted that he has used second-rate copies of some photos taken from the net for not having to go to NARA in person. Plus apparently he doesn't have his manuscript proofread.

Anyone got an opinion on the succeeding volumes (2 & 3) in this series? In particular Vol 2; does it claim to provide a comprehensive listing of 5th FC claims for the period it covers?

Thanks Ed. I'll probably chase up a copy although it's disappointing that there apparently isn't much coverage of the Japanese side (ie actual losses). Then it really would be the definitive account of fighter ops in the SWPA.

Sadly, neither Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 provide claim list of V FC.

I suggest contacting people on this site:

Hopefully, they can answer questions about Japanese claims.
