Seeking photos of Black 13 of 2./JG3, the a/c of Oblt. Horst Tiedmann that FL intact near Maidstone, Kent, 18.8.40

Hello,

Over 20 years ago, in the BoB 50th Anniversary edition of Fly Past Magazine, they published two poor-quality photos of Tiedmann's Bf109E, W.Nr. Black 13, W.Nr. 1990 down in Abbey Field, Leeds near Maidstone Kent. These were attributed to a Dennis Rolfe, via the author of an account about the incident written by a Paddy Porter.

Does anyone have copies of the these photos or know how this Paddy Porter could be contacted to obtain copies? Our EoE profile artist needs these to help accurately re-create the appearance of this a/c, which had some details erroneously rendered in the version of it published in Vol 2, Section 2, of the Luftwaffe Colours Series on the Jagdwaffe.

I already have the two well-known photos taken of this a/c at night after the aircraft was partially covered by wheat (the British call this corn) to camouflage it.

Can anyone help?

Regards,

Paddy Porter died a number of years ago. If anyone has photos it will be Peter C or Andy Saunders

Hello,

As an update to this post,

1) I've obtained copies of these photos and am now preparing to do a color profile of this a/c and write the history of the plane and pilot for the EoE Project. We have four reference photos from the starboard side of this a/c, plus an excellent description of it from the K-Report, but I have no photos of it from the port side. Are any known to exist? Neither Peter C. nor Andy S. have any.

2) Tiedmann, who died on 15.5.69, evaded capture after his shoot down for at least 12 hours. There is a good story there if details of it can be discovered. Did anyone ever interview him or correspond with him about the details of his evasion on the ground in Britain before his death? Is there any other source for this information? It was mentioned, but with no real details, in his obituary published in 1969 in an issue of "Jägerblatt."

Any help in expanding the info about this incident, or any port-side photos of this a/c would be greatly appreciated.

Chris,

Thanx for checking the Payne Collection. I didn't really expect anything new there. New photos are probably going to have to surface from either local newspaper sources, or from private citizens or soldiers that may have somehow taken a photo or two at the crash site. Or perhaps this one was put on display somewhere, as it was completely intact, and additional photos might surface from that. I'm ever hopeful.
