Chris:

Are you asking about the details from the Luftwaffe side or the RAF side? Where was this?

John: As it is on the Allied side of 12 OCH, I assumed that the people would assume the question is from an Allied viewpoint! I know the German answer-2/123 is the unit, Mediterranean

Hi Chirs

From the book Strike True by C.Shores.

"Another detachment was later sent back to Savoia and here ao 15th September Sgt Stephen was scrambled in a Spitfire IX to intercept a reconnaissance Ju88 north of Benghazi. He caught it at 33,000 ft, chasing it right down to 5,000 ft, where he lost it in cloud. Before it disappeared he had seen the port engine and rear fuselage begin to burn and two of the crew bale out; he claimed it probably destroyed. Next day it was confirmed by intercepts of German radio messages that the aircraft had in fact been lost and later some wreckage was found".

Sgt J.Stephen, 80 Sqn, was flying Spitfire MkIX EN399 and the combat took place between 11:40-12:50hrs.

Regards
David

David: Probably shot down Ju 88 T-1, 4303817, 4U+IK. Ofw Alfred Nitsch, Oblt Peter Schug (St Kap) and Ofw Herbert Richter. All 3 were highly decorated. Many thanks

Hi Chris,

Sorry this is off topic but have you got details of Oblt Schug's decorations? Was he a flugzeugführer or Beobachter?

Cheers

Andy:From what I can see, he was a Beobachter. Nitsch and Richter were both DKiG and I will have to check my photos to see what other decorations they are wearing if that helps

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the info.

I know Nitsch was a flugzeugführer but don't know what Schug or Richter were.

Thanks again

Andy Fletcher
