Whitney DY-N
I am looking for the s/n and information on the service career of Whitney V coded DY-N of 102 Squadron. This was P/O Leonard Cheshire aircraft and it was damaged by a flak hit during the night of 12/13 november 1940. One crewman was wounded and I am not sure if the plane was written off. Thanks in advance.

Re: Whitney DY-N
The serial was P5005 from Chris Goss's book on 102 Sqn. The wounded man was Sgt H Davidson the W/Op.
The aircraft was damaged with much of its fuselarge fabric torn away by flak but it was not lost. Cheshire won a DSO for bringing it back. No other losses for 102 Sqn that night - as detailed in Bomber Command Losses book. Incidentally the ORB may be on the web. See other links. Hope this helps |
Re: Whitney DY-N
The aircraft was later written off while being used by No.19 OTU. Its crash was on the 15th June 1942 on Burgiehill (a few miles south of RAF Kinloss) near Forres.

Hi guys
I assume you have Whitney Spears or Witney Blankets on your respective minds! The aircraft was of course a Whitley!! Cheers Brian |
