Help needed:Arado AR 196 loss Jonsvatnet/Trondheim Norway

Hi!

There is a rumour regarding one Arado went down in Jonsvatnet sometime under the war 1940-1945, the exact year is still unknown, but rumours I have heard is that the plane went straight to the ice with the crew onboard.
The plane was under the search before salvaging the more known Ju88(U4+TK) and Casimirs Heinkel H-111(6N+NH), found on the bottom of the lake.
I have confirmation about the find but no more information is given because it is told to be a wargrave.

Is there any way to search or confirm that this is legit or just a rumour?
Think this is a tuff on because of lack of information...

Any help is much appreciated .

Thanks!

John Fredrik

Not having a date does not make this easy. Have you checked http://www.rafandluftwaffe.info/ ?

Hi Ian!

Thanks for your reply.

Yes I have looked in this website and there is one :

One loss is registrated 30.07.1940, that flight started from Hommelvik sea a bit North of Trondheim. Where it chrashed is unknown but probarly Trondheimsfjord.

John

I remember being advised (can't recall by who!) at the time of the Ju88/He111 recoveries that the wreckage of the Arado was found, but not disturbed due to the war grave status.

Hi Dave!

This is correct.
It was the salvaging team from the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum that told us that at the time .

It has been mentioned in many magazines after the salvage..

They are short on information about what they have found in Jonsvatnet and I am a bit curious about where they have their information from and why it is soo closed for public?
I guess they are afraid of people diving and disturbing the grave, I can relate to that. Jonsvatnet is also the drinking water for Trondheim area and diving/swimming is forbidden..

I guess this is a hard one to confirm...

There are many rumours I am trying to confirm, this is one of them.
A other one is about a BF109 who landed on Jonsvatnet and winged over still not to have been confirmed.

Thanks!

John Fredrik
